KMC launches yoga camps to promote preventive health care

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has launched a series of yoga camps to encourage residents to practice yoga based on their physical condition and health status.

The initiative is being carried out under the “Arogya Jeevan” (Healthy Life) golden program.

According to KMC’s Health Department, each camp runs for five days in a specific location. The first yoga camp was conducted on April 27 in Ward 14, followed by the second in Ward 12 on May 4 and another in Ward 15 on May 13.

The most recent camp, which began last Monday in the Dharahara area, concluded on Friday.

The next yoga camps are scheduled to be held in Wards 31 and 23.

On the final day of each camp, participants receive free health checkups for blood pressure and diabetes. Free herbal supplements are also distributed, including Triphala powder, Ashwagandha, Chyawanprash, Amlaki (Indian gooseberry), and Mahanarayan oil, said senior Ayurvedic practitioner Parvati Rawal.

Another practitioner, Manjushree Thakur, noted that high blood pressure appears to be a common issue among those tested at the camps. Following the checkups, doctors provide counseling on diet, lifestyle habits, and the relationship between mental and physical health.

The program also includes regular yoga training in different wards, training yoga instructors, and promoting physical exercise in open spaces through fitness professionals.

The main goal of the program is to encourage preventive health practices before the onset of illness. KMC officials stated that the initiative aims to reduce the physical, emotional, and financial burden on families caused by health-related issues and to minimize healthcare expenses.
