Seven wards in Kanchanpur declared disaster-affected areas

KANCHANPUR: The government has officially designated seven wards in Kanchanpur, located in Sudur Paschim Province, as disaster-affected regions.

This follows the delayed repair of the bride and guide bund (embankment) damaged by flooding from the Mahakali River last year.

A meeting of the district disaster management committee had previously recommended that the Ministry of Home Affairs declare the area as a disaster zone.

The affected wards include 11, 12, and 13 of Bheemdatta Municipality, and wards 3, 8, 9, and 10 of Dodhara Chandani Municipality. These areas will remain disaster-affected for the next three months.

Kanchanpur’s Chief District Officer, Laxman Dhakal, stated that they are still waiting for the action plan guidelines from higher authorities.

Bhupendra Singh Rawal, Ward Chair of Bheemdatta Municipality, mentioned that, according to his sources, the Nepal Army will be deployed to assist in necessary operations in the affected areas.

Locals in the region have previously protested the increasing flood risk to their communities.

In August of last year, floods from the Mahakali River caused extensive damage, including the destruction of the four-lane bridge and the guide bund that was under construction.
