CC should not be held hostage to indecision: Minister Gurung

KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has said that the Constitutional Council (CC) should not be held hostage to indecision.

Speaking at a meeting of the Legislative Management Committee under the National Assembly on Monday, Minister Gurung participated in discussions on the bill to amend the Constitutional Council (Functions, Duties, Powers, and Procedures) Act, 2066. He stated that delays in the appointment process stem from the Council’s failure to hold meetings regularly.

“It is essential to ensure that the Council meets regularly. The Council should not be paralyzed due to indecision under any circumstances,” he said.

Minister Gurung emphasized the need to create an environment where the Council can make unanimous recommendations. He also called on the main opposition party’s representative to participate in meetings consistently to help maintain the smooth functioning of state mechanisms.

During the discussion, lawmakers Bhuwan Bahadur Sunar, Gopi Bahadur Sarki, Madan Kumari Shah, Ghanashyam Rijal, Bhagwati Neupane, Renu Chand, Suresh Kumar Ale Magar, and others stressed that the bill should be revised in line with the spirit of the Constitution.

Committee Chairperson Tulsa Kumari Dahal noted that Monday’s session focused on a discussion of the bill’s guiding principles. A detailed, clause-by-clause review will be conducted in the committee’s next meeting.
