Foreign Secretary highlights success of Sagarmatha Sambaad in elevating Himalayan issues globally

KATHMANDU: Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai has said that Nepal successfully brought global attention to Himalayan issues through the country’s first-ever Sagarmatha Sambaad.

Speaking at a press conference held after the conclusion of the dialogue, Secretary Rai stated that the event not only elevated Nepal’s international image but also provided a critical platform to highlight ongoing climate challenges.

“The dialogue shed light on the concerns of the Himalayan region, which are also of interest to island nations and beyond,” he said.

The discussions emphasized regional and global partnerships to address climate change, and brought significant focus to the need for developed nations to support Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and developing nations in meeting their climate goals.

Rai noted that the dialogue successfully highlighted the challenges such countries face in implementing the Paris Agreement and achieving their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Participants expressed a collective commitment to solving climate problems through global collaboration.

The dialogue, which began on May 16, concluded today after hosting an inaugural session, 12 parallel sessions, additional side events, and a roundtable on global and regional partnerships.

Secretary Rai announced that the outcomes and messages from the Sagarmatha Sambaad will be presented at key international platforms, including the Glacier Preservation Conference in Tajikistan, the UN High-Level Political Forum in July, the 80th UN General Assembly in September, and COP-30 in Brazil.

He also shared that a “Sagarmatha Call for Action” has been issued, capturing the insights, ideas, and perspectives shared during the dialogue.
