Government approves operation of Damak Business Tower

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to allow the 18-storey Damak Business Tower in Jhapa to operate on a fee-based model.

Constructed at a cost of nearly Rs 2 billion, the tower had remained largely unused since its inauguration by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Mangsir 22. The decision comes after the building was left idle for an extended period despite the investment.

The tower, located in Damak-3, Dapgachhi, was initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic as part of PM Oli’s development agenda. It was built jointly by Chinese company ZCGIEC in partnership with Ashish Om Sairam Construction Company JV.

Although construction was completed two years ago, the facility had yet to come into operation.

The government’s spokesperson and Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, shared the decision during a press briefing following the cabinet meeting held on Baisakh 31.

Gurung also announced that the cabinet had approved a bill to amend and consolidate laws related to industrial property, and that the government would restructure the Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC). A high-level restructuring committee has been formed under the coordination of Govind Raj Pokharel, with Ishwari Kandel and Dr. Yagya Gajadhar Khadka as members.

Additionally, the cabinet approved salary and grade adjustments for senior sub-inspectors of Nepal Police and authorized 31 temporary officer-level positions for the Cooperative Regulatory Authority for fiscal year 2081/82.
