Judicial Council meeting taking place to discuss judge appointments

KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Judicial Council (JC) is taking place today. The meeting, scheduled to take place after 5 p.m., includes the issue of judge appointments on its agenda.

Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut and senior-most Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla are expected to attend after completing their duties at the Supreme Court. Both currently serve on the Constitutional Bench.

“We have held the meeting many times,” said a Judicial Council official. “We will hold it today as well. However, it is not possible to say what decision will be made.”

According to the official, although Chief Justice Raut himself requested that the issue of judicial appointments be included in the agenda, no substantial discussion has taken place so far.

The Supreme Court currently has four vacant judge positions, while 33 posts remain unfilled in the high and district courts.

The shortage of judges has significantly affected the functioning of the Supreme Court.
