Upendra Yadav stresses need to institutionalize federal democratic republic

BIRATNAGAR: Janata Samajwadi Party, Nepal Central Chair Upendra Yadav has highlighted the urgent need to institutionalize the federal democratic republic established through years of people’s struggle and sacrifice.

Inaugurating the party’s first district convention in Biratnagar on Sunday, Yadav said that safeguarding the achievements of inclusiveness and fundamental rights secured through great hardship remains the foremost responsibility of the current political leadership.

Yadav, who also served as Deputy Prime Minister in the past, urged the government to focus on ensuring good governance. He criticized rampant corruption, the entrenched commission-based system, and the influence of middlemen, saying these issues must be curbed to uphold democratic values.

Calling for political stability, he reiterated the party’s longstanding demand to amend the constitution to introduce a fully proportional electoral system.

Addressing the same event, party Co-Chair Rakam Chemjong dismissed any possibility of a return to monarchy, asserting that the federal democratic setup is here to stay. Party General Secretary Rekha Yadav and central member and former minister Jayaram Yadav also echoed this view, stating that there is no alternative to the current republican system.

Party District Chair Rajkumar Yadav, Nepali Congress Provincial Treasurer Rajesh Gupta, and other leaders stressed that a return to autocracy would be a step backward and reaffirmed their commitment to democratic principles.

The district convention is scheduled to elect new leadership later today.
