KATHMANDU: A contempt of court petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court against Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa, alleging that his recent public comments disrespected the judiciary.
According to a source at the Supreme Court, the petition was filed by advocates Ananta Raj Luintel and others, accusing Thapa of attempting to influence a pending case regarding the appointment of 52 constitutional officials.
The court has set a preliminary hearing for Tuesday.
Thapa had made critical remarks about the judiciary during a Loktantra Day program, stating that the Supreme Court was unnecessarily prolonging the case concerning the constitutional appointments and had been indecisive for years.
He reportedly said the court kept “looking into it” or “postponing” the matter, which the petitioners claim undermines the court’s integrity.
They argue that making such statements while the case is still under consideration constitutes contempt of court and are urging legal action against Thapa.
