PM Oli and Deuba agree to appoint new Governor this week: Sources

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) KP Oli and Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba have agreed to appoint a new governor for Nepal Rastra Bank within this week.

The agreement was reached during a two-hour meeting between the two leaders at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar last evening.

“They have agreed to finalize the appointment of the new governor this week,” a source said, adding that the decision will likely be made by next Thursday.

Oli and Deuba have reportedly agreed to appoint Dr. Gunakar Bhatta as the next Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank.

Earlier, the government had formed a recommendation committee, led by Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel with Bijayanath Bhattarai and Bishwa Poudel as members, to oversee the appointment process. However, Bijayanath Bhattarai has since resigned from the committee.

Sources indicate that the two leaders have decided that Monday’s cabinet meeting will appoint a new member to fill the vacant position in the committee and move forward with appointing the governor by Thursday.
