Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association increases egg prices

CHITWAN: The Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association has raised the price of eggs, with large-sized eggs now priced at Rs 430 per crate (30 eggs), medium-sized at Rs 380, and ‘XL’ size at Rs 450 per crate.

Previously, the price of large eggs had dropped to Rs 350 per crate. Binod Pokharel, President of the Association, shared that the decision to increase the prices was made during a meeting held on Saturday.

Egg prices have started to rise gradually, with farmers expressing concerns about not being able to cover even the cost of production. The recent price increase has brought some relief to them.

The price of eggs had reached Rs 525 per crate last year but fell to Rs 350. The current price increase to Rs 450 reflects a recovery in the market.

Pokharel explained that the price hike is due to a decrease in egg production, which has been affected by intense heat, coupled with increased market demand.

The rising temperatures are reducing egg production, particularly in the plains, where most of the country’s eggs are produced.

Madan Pokharel, Secretary of the Association, stated that given the current situation, egg prices are likely to continue rising gradually. Currently, around 3 million eggs are being produced daily in the country.
