Pokharel urges teachers to return to classrooms, calls for formal agreement

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has emphasized the urgency of formalizing previous informal agreements with agitating teachers to ensure schools reopen and academic activities resume without further delay.

Taking to social media, Pokharel welcomed the Supreme Court’s recent directive to the government, saying it reflects a serious concern for the future of students and is a response to the prolonged school closures.

The Court ordered the government to create an environment for teachers to return to classrooms within three days and ensure that the Class 12 board exams proceed on schedule.

Pokharel criticized some teacher leaders for misinterpreting the court’s directive.

“The order is indeed for the government, but the issue is the closure of schools. The focus should be on resuming education, not on stubbornly demanding that the School Education Act be passed only through this session,” he said.

He urged all political parties and stakeholders to act responsibly, stating that conducting schools and exams on time is the core spirit of the Court’s order. “The government is compelled to act on the court’s directive, but the broader responsibility lies with all sides to prioritize education,” Pokharel added.

The statement comes amid continued agitation by teachers over demands related to the School Education Act. Schools in several areas have remained closed as talks between teacher unions and the government remain unresolved.
