RSP discussing general convention in Secretariat meeting

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is holding a Secretariat meeting this afternoon at its central office in Banasthali.

The meeting is expected to deliberate on the upcoming general convention and the Janayatra (public march) scheduled for the month of Baisakh (April-May).

This follows a previous secretariat meeting on Wednesday, where the party denounced the recent arrest of party president Rabi Lamichhane, calling it a breach of legal procedure.

The party claimed that Lamichhane’s arrest on the night of April 4, without proper documentation or timely court presentation, violated due process and constitutional norms.

According to the party, although the Butwal bench of the Tulsipur High Court had issued an order, the Rupandehi District Court failed to act upon it in time, leading to what the RSP labeled an unlawful and hasty arrest.

Lamichhane was detained for over two days before being presented to court on April 7—a delay the party deems automatically illegal.

The RSP further alleged that police authorities acted beyond legal limits, claiming they entered the premises without proper court orders and asked Lamichhane for his last wishes, an action the party described as inhumane and a violation of human rights.

In protest, the party submitted a letter to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), urging a thorough investigation into what it called state-backed repression and rights violations.

Meanwhile, the RSP has also announced a Central Committee meeting for April 17 at the party headquarters. According to leader Manish Jha, the meeting will finalize the structure of the upcoming Janayatra program, make key decisions regarding the national general convention, and assign responsibilities to party office bearers to manage provincial coordination amid the evolving political landscape.
