RSP raises concern over Rabi Lamichhane’s arrest, seeks NHRC intervention

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has called the attention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over “unlawful arrest” and alleged “police brutality” against party president Rabi Lamichhane.

A delegation including Acting General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti and Chief Whip Santosh Pariyar visited the NHRC office this morning to raise concerns regarding Lamichhane’s human rights and to seek intervention from the commission.

On Friday, April 5, the Butwal Bench of the Tulsipur High Court ordered Lamichhane to be remanded in custody for trial on charges related to cooperative fund misappropriation.

The decision came after the High Court overturned an earlier ruling by the Rupandehi District Court, which had allowed his release on a bail of Rs 10 million.

Following the High Court’s order, Lamichhane was arrested from his residence in Kathmandu on the same night.

As the next day was a public holiday (Saturday), he remained in custody for two nights before being transferred to Bhairahawa Prison on April 6.

The RSP has been staging protests against what it calls an unlawful arrest, claiming that Lamichhane was taken into custody without an arrest warrant and subjected to excessive use of force by the police.
