Ram Nawami being observed today

KATHMANDU: Today marks Ram Nawami, the auspicious birth anniversary of Maryada Purushottam Shree Ram.

Also known as Ram Jayanti, the day symbolizes the triumph of truth and righteousness over falsehood and darkness.

Observed on Chaitra Shukla Nawami—the ninth day of the waxing moon in the month of Chaitra according to the lunar calendar—Ram Nawami celebrates the incarnation of Lord Vishnu as Ram, born to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya in Ayodhya during the Treta Yuga.

The festival is marked by the recitation of Ram Katha and the reading of sacred texts such as the Ramayana, which recounts the life, virtues, and deeds of Lord Ram.

Devotees visit temples or offer prayers at home, paying homage to Ram as the embodiment of dharma, compassion, and ideal leadership.

Since early morning, temples across the country have seen a surge of devotees. In the Kathmandu Valley, large crowds have gathered at prominent Shree Ram temples, including the one in Battisputali, to offer prayers and seek blessings.

In Janakpurdham, a historic site linked to Ram’s consort Sita, devotees have thronged the Ramjanaki Temple to participate in rituals and celebrations.

A traditional fair is being held on the temple premises, drawing thousands of pilgrims from Nepal and neighboring India. Many are taking holy dips in Gangasagar and offering prayers at the sacred site.

As part of the tradition, many devotees will also stay awake tonight, singing hymns and devotional songs dedicated to Lord Ram.

Lord Ram is revered as the ideal man—a devoted son, a just ruler, and a person of impeccable moral character.

His reign in Ayodhya, known as Ram Rajya, is remembered even today as a model of justice, equality, and good governance.

It is believed that Lord Vishnu incarnated as Ram to uphold righteousness and eliminate evil from the world—an eternal message that continues to inspire generations.
