RPP holds torch rally protesting arrest of Mishra and Rana

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has organized a nationwide protest, including a torch rally, on Sunday evening after the Kathmandu District Court granted a five-day remand for Vice-chair Rabindra Mishra, lawmaker Dhawal Shumsher Rana, and others.

Following their arrest on Friday, they were taken to the district court in handcuffs for judicial proceedings. The RPP had issued a 24-hour ultimatum on Saturday, demanding their release, but the court extended their detention to proceed with charges under crimes against the state.

Mishra, Rana, and others, including Munindra Rajbhandari, the RTF commander of Durga Prasai’s movement, and Santosh Rajawadi, were presented in court in detainee uniforms.

The arrests followed a violent protest in Tinkune on Friday, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals. Authorities claim those arrested were involved in the unrest and will be prosecuted accordingly.

Alleged religious leader Pushkar Khatiwada, accused of inciting violence against the police, was arrested from his residence in Imadol on Saturday. Meanwhile, Durga Prasai, who initially returned home after fleeing Thapathali, has since gone into hiding.
