Nepal seeks stronger Japanese investment in key sectors: Minister Gurung

KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has highlighted the need for greater Japanese investment in Nepal’s development during a courtesy meeting with Japanese Ambassador Toru Maeda on Wednesday.

Welcoming the newly appointed ambassador, Minister Gurung highlighted Japan’s long-standing contributions to Nepal’s economic and social development. He urged Japanese investors to explore Nepal’s priority sectors, including infrastructure, hydropower, industrial development, and agriculture.

Minister Gurung expressed optimism about the Nepal-2025 World Expo in Osaka, stating that it will create new opportunities to promote Nepali products and strengthen bilateral trade.

He also noted that Nepal will celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties with Japan in 2026, coinciding with the country’s graduation from the Least Developed Countries (LDC) category.

Ambassador Maeda reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Nepal, acknowledging the growing presence of Nepalis in Japan, with around 200,000 Nepali students, workers, and entrepreneurs contributing to bilateral ties.

He also expressed interest in visiting Nepal’s culturally and naturally rich regions like Mustang.

The meeting also covered Japan’s contributions to Nepal’s economic development, including scholarships, technical training, and humanitarian aid, as well as past Japanese support during earthquakes and other natural disasters.

Minister Gurung concluded by stating that Japan remains one of Nepal’s most reliable development partners, and he hoped for continued collaboration in economic growth, investment, and cultural exchange.
