Over 4,000 criminal cases reported in a month



 

KATHMANDU: In just one month, Nepal witnessed a surge in criminal activities, with a staggering 4,468 criminal offenses reported to the police across the country during the month of Falgun (mid-February to mid-March).

Among these cases, banking offenses made up the highest proportion, accounting for 25.22% of the total.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Dinesh Kumar Acharya, the central spokesperson of Nepal Police, revealed that the majority of banking offenses were related to cheque bounce cases.

The Kathmandu Valley reported the highest number of criminal cases, with 1,337 cases registered, highlighting a significant rise in offenses, including banking crimes.

Misuse of social media has also become a growing concern, contributing to an increasing number of criminal cases. In addition to banking offenses, the police recorded 521 cases related to public interest, health, safety, and morality, as well as 501 suicide-related offenses.

Drug-related crimes accounted for 419 cases, followed by 286 cases of theft, 168 cases of rape, 162 cases of fraud, 154 cases of vehicular homicide, 71 cases of attempted murder, and 42 cases of murder.

Among the provinces, Kathmandu Valley topped the list with 1,337 cases, followed by Madhes Province with 711 cases, Koshi with 665, Lumbini with 612, Bagmati with 376, Sudurpaschim with 279, Gandaki with 323, and Karnali Province with 161 cases.
