National Assembly passes resolution to end menstrual discrimination

KATHMANDU: The National Assembly has passed a resolution on ending menstrual discrimination for dignified menstruation and directed the government to take necessary measures for its implementation.

National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal announced that the government has been instructed to enforce the resolution effectively. He also directed the concerned thematic committee to monitor the progress of its implementation.

The resolution, presented by MP Madan Kumari Shah (Garima), was passed unanimously during today’s meeting. It aims to eliminate harmful social practices and discrimination related to menstruation, ensuring dignity and respect for menstruating individuals.

Responding to the discussion on the resolution, Minister for Women, Children, and Senior Citizens Nawal Kishore Sah Sudi stated that the government has already formulated necessary policies to combat menstrual discrimination.

He highlighted that existing policies have been revised to align with current needs and urged for the complete eradication of harmful social practices associated with menstruation.

Minister Sudi stressed the importance of dignified menstruation by discouraging violence, exploitation, and discrimination faced by women during menstruation or childbirth, whether in religious, cultural, or social contexts.

He specifically highlighted the Chhaupadi practice prevalent in the districts of Sudurpaschim and Karnali Provinces, describing it as a social evil that negatively impacts women’s physical, social, and economic well-being.

To address this, the government has been conducting joint awareness-raising and psychosocial counseling campaigns in collaboration with all three levels of government to eliminate harmful traditions related to menstruation.
