IGP Kunwar retires, cabinet to appoint new police chief today

KATHMANDU: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Basanta Bahadur Kunwar has retired from his post today following the completion of his 30-year service in the Nepal Police.

The government is set to appoint a new IGP during a cabinet meeting scheduled for today.

Along with IGP Kunwar, five Additional Inspector Generals (AIGs) — Janak Bhattarai, Tek Prasad Rai, Kuber Kadayat, Durga Singh, and Buddhi Gurung — have also retired due to the mandatory 30-year service rule.

In addition, three Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) — Bhola Rawal, Ganesh Chand, and Dhruvraj Raut — will also step down from their positions.

The government is preparing to appoint a new IGP from among AIGs Deepak Thapa, Sudip Giri, and Tek Bahadur Tamang, according to sources. The cabinet is also planning to promote eligible officers to fill the vacant AIG and DIG posts left by the retirees.
