Prachanda blames Oli government for rise of monarchist protests

KATHMANDU: Maoist Center Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal has blamed the coalition government led by KP Sharma Oli for the resurgence of monarchist protests across the country.

Addressing the House of Representatives on Tuesday as the leader of the main opposition party, Dahal said that the misrule and incompetence of the Oli government over the past seven months have fueled public dissatisfaction, pushing various communities and groups to take to the streets.

Dahal claimed that foreign powers are also involved in the recent monarchist movements, which intensified on Sunday.

“Organized forces, both domestic and international, are behind the monarchist resurgence,” he said.

Recalling the aftermath of monarchy abolishment in other countries, Dahal remarked that while deposed monarchs were often killed or persecuted elsewhere, Nepal’s monarchy was abolished peacefully, granting former royals dignified citizenship.

He warned monarchists not to exploit the democratic space that grants them freedom of expression, cautioning against aggressive tactics.

The Maoist chairman emphasized that the democratic system in Nepal has ensured equal rights even for former monarchists, but he urged them to respect the political transition and refrain from undermining the republic.
