KATHMANDU: Sher Bahadur Deuba, President of the ruling Nepali Congress, has dismissed any suggestion that there is an atmosphere in favor of the monarchy or former King Gyanendra Shah.

Speaking to reporters at Geta Airport in Kailali on Monday, Deuba responded to questions about the recent royalist demonstration in Kathmandu, saying he did not see any such movement gaining traction.

“I have not seen any such atmosphere,” Deuba said when asked about the growing sentiment in favor of the monarchy.

He further downplayed the demonstration, saying, “Nothing happened,” in response to a journalist’s query about rumors of a significant demonstration in the capital.

Deuba also responded to questions about India’s involvement in elevating the former king. When asked whether India had played a role in promoting Gyanendra Shah, Deuba firmly stated, “There is no such thing as someone elevating him. I don’t even know if he was elevated.”

The comments came amid ongoing discussions about royalist sentiments and their influence in the country, with Deuba stressing that the monarchy remains a non-issue in the current political landscape.
