Foreign Minister assures justice for Prakriti Lamsal’s family

KATHMANDU: Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba met the parents of Prakriti Lamsal, a Nepali student who was found dead under suspicious circumstances at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar, India.

On Monday, Minister Rana visited Butwal, where she assured Prakriti’s family that the Nepali government is making every possible effort to ensure justice.

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and Lumbini Minister for Urban Development and Water Supply Saroj Thapa (Roj Rana) were also present during the meeting.

Prakriti Lamsal, a student at KIIT University, was found dead in her hostel room on February 14.

Her death has sparked widespread protests among Nepali students in India, demanding a fair investigation.

Reports suggest that Prakriti had filed two complaints with the university’s International Relations Department, alleging that a fellow student had been mentally harassing her.

However, her complaints were not taken seriously. As tensions escalated, university security personnel and bouncers allegedly assaulted protesting Nepali students. Following this, over 300 Nepali students have returned home.

The Odisha state government has formed a high-level investigation committee, and a suspect, Abdhik Srivastava, is currently in  police custody. On March 3, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli spoke with Prakriti’s father, Sunil Lamsal, over  the phone, expressing his commitment to justice.

UML leader Mahesh Basnet and Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala have also met with Prakriti’s family, urging for a thorough and impartial investigation.

Prakriti’s father has demanded that the Nepali government take strong action to prevent such incidents from happening again to other Nepali students studying abroad.
