Magar National Unity Day observed today

NAWALPARASI: Magar communities nationwide are observing the 43rd Magar National Unity Day today with a range of activities and events.

Cultural processions and demonstrations are taking place in various parts of Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East), an area with a significant Magar population.

The events are being organized by the Nepal Magar Association’s district working committee, along with other local organizations, as shared by Indra Phal Magar, a central member of the Association.

“On the occasion of Magar Foundation Day, Magar associations at the district, municipality, and rural municipality levels, including those abroad, are organizing several programs,” he said.

Bhum Bahadur Rai Magar, president of the Association’s Nawalpur chapter, mentioned that the day plays a key role in preserving traditional folk cultures such as Salaijo, Jhyaure, and Kauda.

The day is also aimed at raising awareness among the younger generation about the Magar language, culture, history, and customs.

Celebrated annually on Falgun 15 (February 27), this day honors the united efforts to protect the rights and identity of the Magar community and marks the founding of the Association.

According to the 2078 BS National Census, the Magar community in Nepal has a population of 2.01 million, accounting for 6.9 percent of the country’s total population.

In recognition of the day, all eight local governments in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East) have declared a public holiday.

Notices from these local governments confirm that all public offices will remain closed today to observe the occasion.

The municipalities of Gaindakot, Devchuli, Kawasoti, and Madhyabindu, as well as the rural municipalities of Hupsekot, Binayi Triveni, Bullingtar, and Boudikali, have all declared the public holiday.

According to the National Census, the Magar community in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East) comprises 103,949 individuals, making up 27.49 percent of the district’s total population.
