KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has warned that the party will be weakened if it delays holding its general convention until after the upcoming general election.

Speaking at a tea party organized for representatives of the Democracy Fighters Association in Kathmandu on Saturday, Koirala emphasized the importance of holding the party’s general convention on time. He urged party members to pressure the leadership to ensure the convention is not postponed.

Koirala expressed concern over the current state of the party, saying, “Looking at the activities since the formation of the two-party alliance, it seems that the Nepali Congress has become UML-like.”

He argued that, despite being a major political force, it is not appropriate for the Nepali Congress to participate in the government under the leadership of other parties.

He also stressed the need for the party to maintain its role as a vigilant opposition, consistently warning against the government’s wrongdoings. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of ensuring justice within the party, stating, “No injustice should be allowed to anyone within the party.”

Koirala’s remarks come amid growing debate within the Nepali Congress about the timing of the general convention and its strategic direction ahead of the general election.
