KATHMANDU: Traffic police in Bagmati Province have taken action against 70,331 vehicles in the past seven months as part of a special campaign to reduce road accidents.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohan Khand, spokesperson for the Nepal Police Highway Safety and Traffic Management Office in Ramnagar, Chitwan, the campaign has resulted in the collection of Rs 59.18 million in fines.
The traffic police have been monitoring vehicle speeds using CCTV cameras and reader units installed along the East-West Highway. Strict checks have been enforced against overloaded vehicles, speeding, riding without helmets, and triple-riding on motorcycles, DSP Khand said.
During the same period, 1,256 road accidents were recorded across 10 districts of Bagmati Province, leading to 170 fatalities and 463 injuries.
Authorities have vowed to tighten enforcement on highways and auxiliary roads to curb reckless driving and improve road safety.
