Ramhari Khatiwada proposes selling monkeys to China to curb growing threat

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress MP Ramhari Khatiwada has called on the government to explore alternative solutions to the growing problem of monkey invasions across the country.

Speaking during a session of the House of Representatives on Monday, he suggested that Nepal could follow Sri Lanka’s example by selling monkeys to China as a revenue-generating strategy.

Khatiwada made his remarks while discussing a matter of urgent public importance presented by Minister for Forest and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri.

He stressed that monkeys have become a nationwide threat, particularly in rural hill settlements, where they disrupt agriculture and force people to abandon their homes.

“Monkeys have created terror throughout the country. There is a severe problem in villages across Nepal. Since they have been declared harmful animals, we should consider selling them like Sri Lanka did,” he said.

He also highlighted similar issues in the Terai region, where wild elephants frequently invade villages, causing fear and destruction. According to Khatiwada, selling monkeys to China could serve as a practical solution to mitigate the problem while generating government revenue.
