U-19 Women’s World Cup: Nepal to face Australia today

KATHMANDU:  Nepal is set to compete against Australia in its third match of the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup today. Having played two matches on January 18 and 20, this will be Nepal’s final group-stage game.

Nepal lost its first match against Bangladesh by five wickets and its second match against Scotland by one wicket. With hopes of securing their first victory, the Nepali team will aim to defeat Australia in today’s match.

The match, part of the ongoing tournament in Malaysia, is scheduled to begin at 12:15 PM. Nepal is placed in Group ‘D’ alongside Bangladesh, Australia, and Scotland. Australia tops the group with two wins and four points, followed by Bangladesh and Scotland, each with two points. Nepal, without any points, is at the bottom of the table.

Group ‘A’ includes host Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies, while Group ‘B’ consists of England, Ireland, Pakistan, and the USA. Group ‘C’ features New Zealand, Samoa, South Africa, and Nigeria.

The Nepali team, led by captain Puja Mahato, traveled to Malaysia for the World Cup. In their opening match, Nepal batted first after losing the toss against Bangladesh and was all out for 52 runs in 18.2 overs. Bangladesh chased the 53-run target in 13.2 overs with five wickets remaining.

In their second match against Scotland, Nepal set a target of 74 runs, which Scotland achieved in 18.4 overs, losing nine wickets. A loss in today’s match would eliminate Nepal from the group stage.
