Department of Archaeology to begin excavations in Panchkhal

In the past, excavations in Panchkhal revealed Lichchhavi and medieval materials, including ancient palace mud, bricks, and other artifacts, which have been confirmed as significant archaeological finds.

KATHMANDU: The Department of Archaeology is set to resume excavations in the ancient heritage site located in Panchkhal Municipality-7, Kavrepalanchok, this year, following a four-year hiatus.

The decision to move forward with the excavation comes after the completion of a ‘Geophysical Survey’ conducted by a British expert team in April 2021, which revealed significant potential for archaeological findings.

According to the department’s spokesperson, Ram Bahadur Kunwar, the survey report indicated the presence of Lichchhavi and medieval heritage at the site.

The report, received in 2022, recommended further exploration and excavation to uncover the area’s historical significance. The findings have prompted discussions between the Department of Archaeology and Panchkhal Municipality to finalize the process for excavation and survey coordination.

The initial survey, which was conducted with British experts using specialized equipment, highlighted abundant potential for historical archaeological heritage in various locations throughout Panchkhal. Following the survey, the department plans to prepare a budget and action plan for re-surveying and excavating the area during the current fiscal year.

Mayor Mahesh Kharel has emphasized the municipality’s efforts to preserve Panchkhal’s heritage, stating that a detailed ‘master plan’ will be developed once the surveys are completed and reports are received. He also noted that land issues in the heritage area must be addressed as part of the process.

In the past, excavations in Panchkhal revealed Lichchhavi and medieval materials, including ancient palace mud, bricks, and other artifacts, which have been confirmed as significant archaeological finds.

The Department of Archaeology and Panchkhal Municipality are working together to ensure the preservation and further investigation of this invaluable heritage.
