Discussion held between Speaker and PM to convene Parliament winter session on Jan 31

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Speaker Devraj Ghimire held discussions today at Singha Durbar to convene the winter session of Parliament, likely starting on January 31.

According to a Parliament Secretariat staff member, the Prime Minister suggested January 31 as the session date during a meeting held at noon.

While an earlier date of January 27 was initially considered, delays pushed the proposed session to January 31.

The decision to finalize the session date will be taken in today’s Cabinet meeting.

The government is expected to recommend to President Ram Chandra Poudel that sessions of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly be convened from January 31.

The delay in calling the winter session has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who highlighted the pending discussions on bills and pre-budget matters.

On January 17, seven opposition parties held a press conference, threatening to demand a special session if the government failed to act promptly.

Adding to the tension, the government has issued five ordinances in the absence of a parliamentary session, a move opposed by the opposition.

This year’s winter session is being convened one and a half months later than last year.
