KATHMANDU: The journey to Manang, a popular tourist destination, has become significantly easier due to the recent expansion of road infrastructure. After nearly two decades of development, the Dumre-Besisahar-Chame road section has seen considerable progress, making access to the region more convenient.
The Dumre-Besisahar-Chame project has completed the blacktopping of eight kilometers of road in the last fiscal year, with a stretch from Besisahar to Khudi now fully paved, according to the project’s sub-engineer, Suman Adhikari.
“The Manang-Marsyangdi Hydropower Project has also contributed to the road development efforts, particularly in challenging terrains,” said Adhikari.
He added that the project’s vehicles need to navigate the area, which has accelerated infrastructure improvement. A budget of Rs 510 million has been allocated for the continued construction of roads and bridges along the Besisahar-Chame section.
Pratikman Singh Pradhan, Assistant Manager of Butwal Hydropower Company Limited, highlighted that road widening and infrastructure development around the roundabout area are ongoing to facilitate the transportation of materials for the hydropower project.
“Development in Manang isn’t just about energy production. The region is also a key tourist destination, and expanding the road network will not only make travel easier but also boost tourism and improve the local economy. Road development is playing a crucial role in both energy production and enhancing the daily lives of locals,” said Pradhan.
The 135 MW Manang-Marsyangdi Hydropower Project, under construction in Chame Rural Municipality and Nason Rural Municipality, is prioritizing road development in the area.
The project, which has a total cost of Rs 33.38 billion, is a joint venture between Butwal Power Company and three Chinese companies.
It aims to generate approximately 766.6 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, contributing to the region’s energy and infrastructure growth.
The project, expected to be completed within four years, will provide substantial benefits to the local community by improving transportation access and supporting tourism, which plays a key role in the economic development of Manang.
