KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court’s Constitutional Bench is set to hear a writ petition on Wednesday challenging the appointment of 52 individuals to constitutional bodies by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli through an ordinance during his previous term.

The writ petition, which questions the legality of the appointments made via an ordinance, was filed on January 2.

Despite being scheduled for a hearing on Wednesday, the case has been pending for almost four years, with the court yet to make a ruling on the issue.

The appointments, which raised concerns about the efficiency of the Supreme Court itself, were made shortly before President Bidya Devi Bhandari swore in 32 individuals based on the recommendations of the Constitutional Council.

Senior advocates Dinesh Tripathi and Om Prakash Aryal filed the writ petition on February 2, 2021, to prevent the appointments and the oath-taking ceremony, citing the possibility of the process proceeding without a parliamentary hearing.

Although some of those appointed have started receiving retirement benefits, the case has remained unresolved, leaving the legal status of the appointments in limbo.
