KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Arzu Rana has said that climate change has spurred unseasonal disasters in Nepal.
Speaking at a blanket distribution event organized by the Safe Motherhood Network Federation, she pointed out that the unseasonal rains and resulting flash floods and landslides in late September, after the monsoon had ended, were direct consequences of climate change.
Rana expressed concern that Nepal, which has not contributed to climate change, is suffering immense losses due to the actions of developed nations.
“We are bearing the brunt of unseasonal floods and landslides, and yet Nepal has had no role in causing these disasters,” she said.
She raised questions about accountability, asking, “Who will compensate Nepal for the damages caused by climate change?” She further warned that the next generation would face increasing challenges as water sources continue to dry up due to climate change.
On a personal note, Rana shared her own painful childbirth experience, highlighting her dedication to ensuring that no woman faces similar life-threatening situations during childbirth, which is why she is committed to the Safe Motherhood Campaign.
During the event, Rana distributed 1,090 blankets to local representatives across multiple municipalities, targeting pregnant women and new mothers in need.
Nepali Congress leader Umesh Shrestha also emphasized the importance of empowering women through entrepreneurship, given their underrepresentation in various sectors.
NC Kavre President Tirtha Lama urged the Minister to prioritize the reconstruction of the BP Highway, which was damaged by recent floods and landslides.
The Safe Motherhood Network, originally launched by 26 women in 1986, has been working as a federation since 2005 to improve maternal health and support communities in need.
