Nepal’s paddy production estimated to rise by 4.04%

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has projected a 4.04 percent increase in paddy production for the current fiscal year, estimating a total yield of 59,55,476 metric tons.

Despite a slight decline of 1.28 percent in the total area under paddy cultivation, which stands at 1,420,636 hectares, average productivity has reached a record high of 4.19 metric tons per hectare.

According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Dr. Matina Joshi Baidya, provinces such as Koshi, Madhesh, Lumbini, and Sudurpaschim have recorded significant growth in paddy production. However, production in Karnali and other regions has declined, primarily due to reduced cultivation areas and unfavorable conditions in districts like Rukum (West) and Lamjung.

Additionally, non-growth of rice crops in parts of Nawalparasi (East) has also contributed to localized production decreases.

The ministry credits an early monsoon—active three days earlier than average—and above-average rainfall for bolstering paddy production this year.

Enhanced availability of chemical fertilizers and improved rice seeds has further contributed to the increased yield.
