Maoist Center concludes Nepal is becoming a geopolitical battleground

KATHMANDU: The opposition CPN (Maoist Center) has concluded that Nepal is moving toward becoming an epicenter of geopolitical tension between global powers.

Vice-Chairperson Agni Prasad Sapkota briefed the media on Thursday following the party’s Standing Committee meeting in Kathmandu.

He stated that geopolitical complexities and increasing rivalries between superpowers are creating a precarious situation for Nepal.

During the meeting, Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal emphasized the importance of national unity amid rising global conflicts. Sapkota quoted Dahal as saying, “Nepal is heading toward becoming an epicenter of a new cold war. In such a scenario, all Nepalis must unite to protect the nation’s sovereignty.”

Dahal reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to non-alignment, the principles of Panchsheel, and the belief that Nepal’s affairs should be managed by Nepalis themselves. “We are committed to peace and will not accept foreign dominance,” he added.

Constitution amendment and implementation

The meeting also discussed the government’s plans for constitutional amendment. Sapkota stated that the Maoist Center supports amendments that promote progress, reforms, and the expansion of people’s rights.

However, he questioned whether the focus should be on amendments or the proper implementation of the existing constitution.

“The constitution has not been implemented as sincerely and effectively as it should have been,” Sapkota said. The party criticized the alliance between the Congress and UML, labeling their approach to governance as unnatural and insincere.

The Maoist Center emphasized that addressing Nepal’s challenges requires moving beyond the status quo. “Effective implementation of the constitution is the immediate need,” Sapkota concluded.
