Hold general convention post 2027 election, suggests Dr Koirala

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Dr Shashank Koirala has highlighted the importance of holding the party’s general convention either at the scheduled time or after the upcoming general election, scheduled for 2027.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Dr Koirala argued against organizing the general convention on the eve of the general election, highlighting the potential for intra-party conflicts that could harm the party’s electoral performance.

“The general election is set for 2027. The general convention should ideally take place two years prior to that. Otherwise, it would be better to hold it after the election,” Dr Koirala said.

He expressed confidence that conducting the convention as scheduled would address dissatisfaction within the party, while warning that holding it just before the general election could create divisions and bitterness among members.

Dr Koirala also stressed the need for ideological unity within the party, saying, “The Koirala family may not always be united, but the ideas must align. Success depends on ideological coherence.”

He further outlined his vision for the party’s future, emphasizing the necessity of internal unity, the dissolution of factions, the strengthening of fraternal organizations, and the establishment of impartial leadership.

Dr Koirala expressed his readiness with a clear blueprint for the general convention, aimed at fostering unity and revitalizing the party’s organizational strength.
