MANANG: As temperatures continue to drop in the district, garbage management has become increasingly difficult.

Chame Rural Municipality, the district headquarters, reported that it has been unable to collect waste daily due to the freezing cold.

Nama Narayan Malla, the officiating chief administrative officer of the rural municipality, issued a notice stating that while the number of people staying in the district headquarters has gradually decreased with the onset of winter—leading to less waste production—the local authorities are still unable to manage it regularly.

The collection of garbage has been suspended until further notice, Malla added. He also urged residents not to dispose of waste in the streets, riversides, or other public spaces, and to manage it individually.

According to Chief District Officer Matrika Acharya, administrative services, including police posts in the upper parts of Manang, have been relocated to lower elevations to continue service delivery.

Two police posts and banking services from Narpabhumi have been moved to the district headquarters to escape the freezing temperatures in the mountainous region.

Similarly, a police post in upper Manang has been shifted to Humde in Disyang Rural Municipality-4 at a lower elevation.

Most locals from higher altitudes have moved down to avoid the extreme cold, and even those in the lower belt of Chame are relocating to warmer areas.

Despite this, government offices, including security agencies, are continuing to operate from the district headquarters.

Local streams and taps have frozen, further complicating daily life. Dr. Divakar Koirala, Chief of the District Hospital, confirmed that they are working to ensure services for those still residing in the headquarters.
