Speaker criticizes government for avoiding Parliament

KATHMANDU: Speaker Devraj Ghimire has expressed dissatisfaction over the government’s increasing tendency to avoid Parliament.

Speaking at a program on  “Lawmakers-Media Dialogue” concluded in Nagarkot on Wednesday, Ghimire remarked that the government appears to be distancing itself from parliamentary proceedings, which he deemed inappropriate.

Addressing journalists, he emphasized that the government must remain fully accountable to Parliament, describing the institution as the “mother” that gave birth to the government.

“The government is acting as if it is afraid of and avoiding the very institution that gave it life,” he said.

The rainy session of Parliament, which began on May 13, ended on September 15.

Despite demands from opposition parties, the government has yet to call for a new session.

Meanwhile, the government decided on Tuesday to issue an ordinance to amend the Cooperative Act.

The ordinance will be forwarded to the President for authentication on Thursday.
