KATHMANDU: Vehicle imports through the Birgunj Customs checkpoint have seen a significant decline in the first five months of the current fiscal year.
According to the Birgunj Customs Office, 482 vehicles, including SUVs, cars, and vans, worth Rs 920.3 million, have been imported in the current fiscal year.
This marks a 38.13 percent drop in the number of imported vehicles and a 16.43 percent decrease in revenue compared to the same period last fiscal year. In the previous fiscal year, 779 vehicles worth Rs 1.2 billion were imported, generating revenue of Rs 2.8 billion for the customs office.
The decrease in imports is not limited to petrol and diesel-powered vehicles.
Imports of electric vehicles through Birgunj have also declined. In the first five months of the current fiscal year, 97 electric vehicles, including SUVs, cars, and vans, worth Rs 147 million, were imported.
This represents a 59.07 percent decrease in the number of electric vehicles imported and a 58.63 percent drop in revenue compared to the same period last fiscal year, when 237 electric vehicles worth Rs 465 million crore were imported, generating Rs 203 million crore in revenue.
