Anti-human trafficking activist Sunita Danuwar passes away

KATHMANDU: Sunita Danuwar, 47, a prominent activist against human trafficking, has passed away.

She was found unconscious at her residence in Jorpati and was immediately taken to Nepal Medical College by her family. According to family sources, she died to a heart attack.

Danuwar was the president of Shakti Samuha, an organization led by survivors of human trafficking. Her contributions to combating human trafficking earned her international recognition.

In 2018, the U.S. Department of State honored her as a “TIP Hero” for her work in addressing trafficking in persons.

Additionally, she was named among the 50 greatest leaders in the world by Fortune magazine.
