Constitution to be amended thru consensus: Home Minister

CHITWAN: Minister for Home Affairs, Ramesh Lekhak, has emphasized that any amendment to the Constitution will be carried out with the consensus of all political parties.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the Nepal Press Union, Chitwan chapter, he underscored the importance of constitutional amendments to strengthen the federal democratic republic and enhance inclusivity.

“Preliminary discussions on this issue have begun. However, the constitution amendment will not be decided by just two political parties,” he stated.

He further explained that the Nepali Congress and the CPN (UML), the largest parties in parliament, had agreed to form the current coalition government to promote political stability, combat corruption, strengthen good governance, support economic activities, and accelerate development.

The Minister also confirmed that the existing political alliance between the NC and UML is stable and will continue until the next general election scheduled for 2084 BS.

On a separate matter, he assured that the government is fully committed to safeguarding the human rights of every citizen.

Addressing the ongoing legal case against Rabi Lamichhane, the Chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, he clarified that the government holds no feelings of “revenge” against him.

“This is a legal issue, and there should be no questions raised about the legal proceedings,” he said.
