By-elections for 41 local-level positions conclude with 62% voter turnout

The by-elections for 41 vacant local-level positions has been conducted peacefully on Sunday, according to Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Thapaliya.

Preliminary reports from the concerned municipalities indicate a voter turnout of 62%.

In Kathmandu’s Ward No. 16, voter turnout stood at 50%, as per the Election Commission.

Local-level by-elections conclude, Vote counting begins 

The local-level by-elections have concluded, and ballot boxes are now being transported to the counting centers.

Following the conclusion of the voting process, ballot boxes from polling stations have been collected and are being taken to the designated locations. Counting for most of the polling centers that conducted elections on Sunday is set to begin today.

In Kathmandu’s Kirtipur municipality, voting has been completed for the positions of mayor, Ward No. 4 chairperson, and Ward No. 1 chairperson. Major political parties have treated the Kirtipur by-election as a matter of prestige. However, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), considered an emerging alternative force, has not fielded candidates in this election.

Rabi Lamichhane’s statement to continue Monday

Rastriya Swatantra Party Chair Rabi Lamichhane’s interrogation and statement recording regarding the Swarnalakshmi Cooperative fraud case concluded for Sunday, with proceedings set to continue on Monday.

Lamichhane, in custody at the Kathmandu Police since Friday, was taken to the office of the district attorney on Sunday morning for further questioning.

However, as the statement remains incomplete, he will stay in Kathmandu at least until Monday, police sources confirmed.

SC rejects petition against dismissal of case involving Former Koshi Province Minister Lila Ballav Adhikari

The Supreme Court has rejected a writ petition challenging the decision not to prosecute former Minister of Koshi Province and CPN-UML Provincial Assembly Member Lila Ballav Adhikari. The petition, filed by senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi, was dismissed on Sunday.

The court stated that the writ could not be registered under its extraordinary jurisdiction, as the investigation so far had not found substantial evidence linking Adhikari to the alleged crime.

“Further action will be taken as per the law if additional evidence emerges,” the court’s ruling read, referencing provisions under Section 128 of the Civil Procedure Code, 2017, and Rule 18 of the Supreme Court Rules, 2017.

Five killed in Rolpa suspension bridge wall collapse

Five people were killed when a pile of mud fell on workers constructing a suspension bridge wall in Rolpa this morning.

Dujaman Pariyar, Om Pariyar, Subitra Pariyar, Deviram Pariyar and Aiti Pariyar, all residents of Sunchhahari Rural Municipality Ward No. 3, were buried under the mudslide, according to the District Police Office, Rolpa.

Five workers were trapped when the mud collapsed during the construction. Two others managed to escape unhurt.

Over 100,000 foreign tourists visit Nepal in November

More than 114,500 foreign tourists visited Nepal in November 2024, according to data released by the Nepal Tourism Board.

This marks the highest number of arrivals in three years.

In November 2023, Nepal welcomed 108,630 foreign visitors, while in November 2022, the figure was 72,653. In comparison, only 26,135 tourists visited Nepal in November 2021.
