LALITPUR: Speaker Devraj Ghimire emphasized that sports are vital not only for personal health and enjoyment but also for enhancing the nation’s image.

Speaking at the opening of the First Jhapa-1 Kathmandu Cup Futsal, organized by the Jhapa Constituency-1 Parliament Secretariat, Kathmandu, and the Nepali Congress (NC) Constituency-1 Kathmandu Contact Committee, Ghimire highlighted that the event, initiated by NC parliamentarian Bishwa Prakash Sharma, was a significant step forward.

Praising the event as a creative and impactful initiative, Ghimire expressed concern over the state’s lack of attention to sports. He, however, acknowledged the progress Nepal has made in sports in recent years, particularly in cricket.

“Nepal has a bright future in sports if there is sustained, collective support and promotion across all sectors,” he said. “With continued effort, we can achieve even greater success in sports.”

Ghimire also noted the improvement in the country’s sports scene compared to the past, urging for further investment and support in the sector.

Former NC General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula also lauded the party’s efforts to bring people together in Jhapa through creative initiatives like the Futsal tournament.

During the opening, Speaker Ghimire kicked off the match by handing over a ball to participants, including representatives from various political parties, artists, and leaders from different sectors.

The tournament features seven competing teams, as well as a friendly match. According to Prajwal Koirala, Chairperson of the NC Constituency-1 Kathmandu Contact Committee, the winning team will receive a cash prize of Rs 21,000, along with a trophy and medal, while the runners-up will receive Rs 11,000, along with a trophy and medal.
