BP Cancer Hospital introduces ‘flow cytometry’ service

CHITWAN: BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital in Chitwan has introduced a service to detect the types of blood cancer.

Earlier, it had been sending most of the samples to India as well as to Kathmandu for the same.

The hospital launched the ‘flow cytometry’ service after buying a machine at Rs 15 million, said Deputy-Director of the hospital, Dr Umesh Nepal.

Similarly, the hospital had sent a doctor and a technician to Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, India, for training in order to operate the service.

Executive Director of the hospital, Dr Shivaji Poudel said earlier it took more than 15 days to get the report of the test. Now one can get it within five days.

With the launching of the service, the test charge has also reduced to Rs 12,000.

Earlier, the charge was more than Rs 30,000 as the samples had to be sent to India for tests.

The availability of the ‘flow cytometry’ service at the hospital would benefit the patients as the hospital witnesses many blood cancer patients.

Poudel mentioned, “It has become easier to detect the types of blood cancer”, adding the hospital is going to resume mammogram service, disrupted since long, soon.
