Former Liverpool striker Saunders receives 10 week sentence

CHESTER: Former Nottingham Forest striker Dean Saunders has been jailed for 10 weeks at Chester Magistrates’ Courts after pleading guilty to failing to comply with a roadside breath test and failing to provide a breath sample for analysis.

Saunders, who also played for Aston Villa, Liverpool and Derby County and was capped by Wales 75 times, is a regular football TV and radio pundit.

The 55-year-old was stopped on suspicion of drink driving by police in Boughton, Chester, on May 10, and pleaded guilty by letter yesterday and was sentenced on Wednesday morning.

Saunders, of The Paddocks, Whitegate, near Northwich, Cheshire, had initially denied both charges at an earlier hearing.

He was also banned from driving for 30 months. The former Red arrived at Forest from Galatasaray in 1996, with the club paying £1.5m for his services, but with the Reds relegated from the Premier League that season, the Welshman moved to Sheffield United.
