KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress, a coalition partner of the UML, has voiced its objection to the ongoing protests by the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in Pokhara following the arrest of its chair, Rabi Lamichhane, in connection with a cooperative fraud case.

Min Bahadur Bishwakarma, the chief of the party’s publicity department, issued a statement on Wednesday condemning the RSP’s protests. He stated, “The Congress expresses its serious objection to activities that obstruct impartial investigations and judicial decision-making by the statutory bodies of the state, and disturb the personal freedom of citizens as well as social harmony, local peace, and security.”

In the statement, the Nepali Congress has reminded RSP that under the rule of law, all citizens are equal. The party emphasized that the law should be equally applied to everyone. It also highlighted that it is the government’s responsibility to implement the report from the parliamentary committee following a detailed study, which the Council of Ministers has decided to put into action.

“The hooliganism and street demonstrations by the supporters of Rabi Lamichhane are hindering the preliminary investigation in the judicial process and creating undue pressure on neutral state bodies. Therefore, the Nepali Congress has drawn serious attention to such unfair activities,” the statement continued.

Through the statement, Nepali Congress reiterated its commitment to ensuring that anyone involved in activities considered criminal under prevailing law, regardless of their party affiliation, position, or status, should be investigated and brought to justice.

“In maintaining the rule of law, making the judicial process credible, and ensuring a free and fair justice system, we sincerely appeal to all political parties, civil society, and the general public to cooperate with the investigation and judicial process, refraining from provocative and disorderly activities,” the statement reads.
