DHANUSHA: Laddu worth around Rs 30 million were sold in Janakpurdham, the capital of Madhes province, today, on the day of Maha Astami under the ongoing Bada Dashain festival.

Laddu is a sweet, fried, doughy dessert shaped into a ball. Mahaastami marks the eighth day of the 10-day-long Dashain festival, the biggest festival of the Nepalis.

Hotel and Tourism Entrepreneurs Association central member and proprietor of Om Bakery Janakpurdham, Dashrath Saha, said that it is estimated about 65 thousand kilos ‘laddu’ worth Rs 30 million was sold in Janakpurdham today.

Proprietor of Hansaraj Sweet Shop Santosh Gupta said varieties of ‘laddus’ were sold in the market today.

People bought the laddus to offer them to the goddess at various temples. The varieties of laddus include: ghiuwala, suddha ghiuwala, motichur, mahindana, gond and mewa etc.

Besides laddus, other sweets as Khir Kadam, Keshar Sandesh, Mewa Paik, Kaju Barfi were also sold.

There are over 200 sweet shops in downtown Janakpurdham.

Meanwhile, 15 thousand and four he-goats were sacrificed during the Dashain this year at the Rajdevi Temple, the main goddess shrine in Janakpurdham.

The goats were slaughtered in front of the temple from 8.39 pm on Thursday. It took eight hours for the ritual slaughter of the animals, the Mahaveer Youth Committee said.

Last year, 15thousand and 251 he-goats were slaughtered.
