Monsoon retreats from Kathmandu Valley and beyond

KATHMANDU: The monsoon has withdrawn from several regions in Nepal, including the Kathmandu Valley.

According to the Weather Forecasting Division, the monsoon has departed from all areas of Karnali Province, Lumbini Province, and Gandaki Province, as well as the western part of Bagmati Province and parts of Madhes Province.

Earlier, the monsoon had already cleared from many areas in Karnali Province and parts of Lumbini Province.

As of October 8, 2024, this year’s monsoon has exited from the entirety of Karnali Province, Lumbini Province, and Gandaki Province, along with the western part of Bagmati Province, including Kathmandu Valley, and several areas in the western region of Madhes Province, according to the Division.

The monsoon first left many areas of Karnali Province, including the Sudurpaschim Province, and parts of Lumbini Province earlier this week.

Currently, the monsoon remains only in the eastern part of Bagmati Province, a few locations in the western Madhes Province, and eastern Koshi Province.

The Division has indicated that as the monsoon air weakens, the remaining areas should see the monsoon’s exit in the coming days.

Meteorologists note that the average entry date for the monsoon in Nepal is June 13, with an average exit date of October 2.

This year, the monsoon entered on June 10—three days earlier than average—but is also experiencing a delayed departure.

As the monsoon progresses from east to west during its entry, it similarly exits from the west and gradually moves out toward the east.

Meteorologists predict that the post-monsoon season will commence once the monsoon has completely exited Nepal, lasting until November, after which winter will begin.
