KATHMANDU: In the wake of devastating floods and landslides caused by last week’s relentless rainfall, a team has been mobilized in Kavrepalanchok to provide much-needed relief to victims.
The federal government has announced relief funds for the families of those who lost their lives, as well as support for the reconstruction of areas severely impacted by the natural disaster.
The District Administration Office , Kavre, has deployed teams to five local levels hardest hit by the landslides: Panauti Municipality, Bethanchok Rural Municipality, Roshi Rural Municipality, Namobuddha Municipality, and Mandandeupur Municipality.
These areas have reported the highest number of casualties. Umesh Kumar Dhakal, Chief District Officer and Coordinator of the District Disaster Management Committee, confirmed that relief money was initially provided to the families of victims in Banepa and Panauti.
To speed up the process and ensure minimal hardship for the affected families, Dhakal explained that relief teams are being sent directly to the homes of the deceased where possible.
In more remote areas, teams are working to deliver aid despite the challenging conditions, including blocked roads. “We are making every effort to ensure relief reaches the victims,” Dhakal said.
Assistant Chief District Officer Subas Poudel stated that each family will receive Rs 200,000 in relief for every deceased individual, with an additional Rs 100,000 provided for each additional death within the same family.
Teams deployed to Temal Rural Municipality are currently searching for alternative routes due to severe road damage.
On Friday, the government declared several “disaster-prone areas” in the district to prioritize relief and reconstruction efforts.
Among these areas are Roshi, Temal, Bethanchok, Chaunrideurali, and Mahabharat Rural Municipality, as well as the municipalities of Panauti, Namobuddha, and Mandandeupur.
The death toll across the district has risen to 72, with five people still missing and 75 others injured.
The District Police Office reported that the victims include 31 women, 25 men, eight boys, and six girls.
The disaster claimed the life of a foreign national in Panauti and a woman from Ramechhap in Roshi Rural Municipality.
Several roads remain blocked, leaving some areas without electricity and communication services.
Relief efforts are ongoing as local and federal authorities work together to provide aid and rebuild affected communities.
