Kulekhani dam gates opened after reservoir fills

MAKWANPUR: The dam gates of the Kulekhani Hydropower Project, located in Ward No-2 of Indrasarovar Rural Municipality, have been opened after the reservoir reached full capacity due to continuous rainfall.

Tara Dutt Bhatta, the head of Kulekhani Hydropower Project I, confirmed that the dam overflowed last night, prompting the sounding of sirens. The gates were opened this morning to release water.

Currently, 300 cusecs of water are being released per minute, with adjustments to be made as needed, Bhatta added.

Residents along the rivers downstream of the Kulekhani Dam, including Sisneri, Thingan Wesi, Phaparbari, and Raigaon in Makwanpur, as well as areas in Sindhuli, Rautahat, and riverside settlements along the Bagmati in Sarlahi, have been advised to remain on high alert.

Makwanpur’s Chief District Officer, Tirtha Raj Chiluwal, stated that security personnel and volunteers are on high alert to monitor the situation. The Kulekhani Hydropower Plant is operating at full capacity since the reservoir was filled.
