KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli has convened a meeting of the Constitutional Council, scheduled for 5:00 PM today at Singha Durbar, as informed by the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.

In accordance with the Constitution of Nepal, the Prime Minister serves as the Chairman of the Constitutional Council.

The Council also includes the Chief Justice, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives, and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Today’s meeting is set to address the recommendation for the new Chief Justice.

The Judicial Council has already submitted the names of eight judges for consideration.

The Constitutional Council will review this list during the meeting.

It remains uncertain whether Chairman of the Maoist Center Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda and Deputy Speaker Indira Rana will attend the meeting.

Prachanda is currently in Madhes for party meetings and training.

There are also discussions among the ruling Congress and UML parties regarding the potential removal of Deputy Speaker Rana from her position.

The Constitutional Council is tasked with recommending one of the eight candidates proposed by the Judicial Council for the role of Chief Justice.

The President will appoint the new Chief Justice upon approval by the Parliamentary Hearing Committee.

The current Chief Justice, Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha, is set to retire soon.

The Constitution mandates that the appointment process for the new Chief Justice should begin at least one month prior to the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice.
